The debtor does not pay the invoices – how to collect the debt effectively?
Business activity brings many challenges, and one of the most serious problems that entrepreneurs have to struggle with is the situation when debtors do not settle their financial obligations. Failure to pay invoices can seriously harm a company’s financial stability, but there are a number of effective actions that entrepreneurs can take to recover their debts.
The first step that can help avoid problems with debtors is to establish a clear credit policy. A good credit policy defines payment terms, deadlines and debt collection procedures. The entrepreneur should clearly communicate with customers about these conditions already at the stage of establishing cooperation.

Payment monitoring
Regularly monitoring customer payments allows you to quickly detect potential problems. In case of delays, it is worth contacting the debtor and asking about the reasons, but immediate response to any arrears is crucial.
Sending reminders and reminders
If the debtor is late with payment, it is worth sending him a reminder about the arrears. This may be an e-mail, registered letter or telephone reminder. As the period of arrears increases, more formal reminders can be made, informing the debtor of the legal consequences.
Using the pre-litigation stage
If, despite taking independent actions, the debt cannot be recovered, it is worth using the services of a lawyer. Sending a request for payment or contacting a lawyer with the debtor often allows you to obtain money from the debtor.
Filing a court case
The last resort, when all previous actions have failed, is to file a lawsuit against the debtor. You then obtain an enforcement title with which you go to the Bailiff’s Office to start enforcement proceedings.
Future transaction security
After resolving a case with a given debtor, it is worth implementing preventive measures to avoid similar situations in the future. This may include changing payment terms, requiring financial collateral, or assessing the credibility of potential customers more thoroughly.
In conclusion, effective debt recovery requires flexibility, consistency and the ability to effectively manage customer relationships. Implementing clear payment rules, regular monitoring of payments and quick response to any arrears are key elements in preventing and solving problems related to debtors. If necessary, using a lawyer or going to court may be necessary to maintain the financial health of the company.
